Oil industry executives in the US call the Gulf of Mexico the "wild wild west", a place where regulations are rarely enforced and offshore operators can do what they want. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on Tuesday consolidated more than 70 suits over the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in federal court in Louisiana, despite BP PLC's efforts to transfer the cases to Texas.
